When most people think of Disney, they think of park tickets, Lightning Lanes, and rushing to get to rope drop. This year, some of our favorite Disney memories happened during a rest day, when we never stepped foot inside a theme park. We were staying in a cottage at Margaritaville Orlando and started our morning exactly how vacation should start, with a slow, relaxing breakfast together. No alarms. No rushing. No trying to make it to a ride before the crowds. Just coffee on the patio, breakfast, and a peaceful start to the day. Then we put on our favorite Disney t-shirts and hopped in the van.
Starting the Day with Disney Mini Golf: Winter Summerland

Our first stop was Winter Summerland Miniature Golf, located right next to Disney's Blizzard Beach. We decided to start our day there because the forecast called for rain, and we weren't quite sure how bad it would get. We also had a secret weapon…unused Magical Extras mini golf vouchers from a previous Disney vacation.
If you're reading this and have no idea what "Magical Extras" are, that's exactly why working with a travel advisor matters. Disney offers a lot of perks and extras that many families never even realize they have access to. One of my favorite parts of planning Disney vacations is helping families maximize every benefit available to them so they get the most value out of their trip.
Turns out Winter Summerland, Disney's unique and fun Mini Golf course, was a great way to start our Disney day. My kids range from 15 to 4 years old, so sometimes finding entertainment to please everyone is a challenge. All three of them genuinely had a great time—which, if you're a parent, you know, is sometimes the hardest part of planning a family vacation! The course is themed around Santa Claus taking a vacation in Florida and is filled with whimsical details, holiday decorations, oversized beach-themed displays, and plenty of Disney magic. Even my teenager was laughing and having fun.
About halfway through our round, the rain arrived. Thankfully, the course has several covered areas throughout, so we stayed relatively dry while we waited for the worst of it to pass. By the time we finished our game, the clouds had moved out, the sun was shining again, and we were ready to continue our Disney adventure.
Free Parking and Foodie Favorites at Disney Springs
Once the rain cleared, we headed over to Disney Springs, and honestly, if you've never explored Disney Springs outside of a park day, you're missing out. One of the best parts? Parking is completely free. We parked the van, spent the rest of the afternoon using Disney's free transportation system, and never had to move the car again.
First stop was lunch at Polite Pig, which has become one of our favorite Disney Springs restaurants. Between the smoked meats, mac and cheese, barbecue, sandwiches, and kid-friendly options, there was something for everyone. My kids are foodies and all have very different tastes, which means finding a restaurant that makes everyone happy can sometimes feel impossible, but Polite Pig is always a hit. I highly recommend the Butcher Board, it’s a great way to try several different options and allows for sharing.

Souvenirs and LEGO Builds Without a Park Ticket
After lunch, we spent some time exploring World of Disney. If you're worried about missing out on Disney shopping without visiting the parks, don't be. World of Disney has an incredible selection of merchandise, and honestly, I often find things here that I never see anywhere else. This was where I found an amazing Spirit Jersey that immediately came home with me. Are they expensive? Yes. Are they ridiculously comfortable and somehow become your favorite sweatshirt the second you put one on? Also yes.
From there we wandered into the LEGO Store, which turned into almost an hour of exploring, building, and admiring all of the incredible displays. It's one of those places where you think you'll stop in for five minutes and somehow lose track of time. All of my kids found a LEGO set that they just had to have.
Disney Resort Hopping: Beignets at Port Orleans French Quarter
Once we finished shopping, we dropped our bags back at the van and officially started what I think is one of Disney's most underrated experiences: resort hopping. We took advantage of Disney's free transportation and hopped on a boat to Port Orleans French Quarter for beignets. The boat ride is always so peaceful, and we love getting to pass Port Orleans Riverside.
Port Orleans Riverside is my favorite resort for a family of 5 when they are trying to stick to a budget. There is so much to do at the resort that the kids are never complaining about being bored. The pool activities were the best I’ve experienced on property and my husband and I were actually able to lay and relax for a while. Additionally you have access to Port Orleans French Quarter and their pools!

If you've never visited the French Quarter, add it to your list. The resort is beautiful, charming, and feels completely different from the rest of Disney World. We grabbed fresh beignets, explored the grounds, and let the kids enjoy the atmosphere. It ended up being one of those simple vacation moments that everyone remembers.
Navigating the Disney Skyliner Transportation Hub
From there, we took a free Disney bus to Hollywood Studios so we could hop aboard the Skyliner. Little tip: Hollywood Studios is a great “hub” when you’re trying to navigate where to go next. Skyliner access and bus stops are right next to each other and there are vending machines in case you have children begging for a drink. You can transfer to essentially anywhere on Disney property from this hub and do not need to enter the park to connect.
I know technically it's transportation, but in our family, the Skyliner is absolutely an attraction. We rode over to Caribbean Beach Resort and made a necessary stop at Joffrey's Coffee. I needed my Shakin Jamaican Cold Brew and my girls can never turn down blue ICEEs, so of course we had to grab those before continuing our journey.
We then rode the Skyliner toward EPCOT, enjoying some of the best views on Disney property. One of my favorite things about the Skyliner is that it slows you down. You're not rushing to your next Lightning Lane. You're just enjoying the view and spending time together.

Boardwalk Magic and Unexpected Fireworks Views
Once we arrived near EPCOT, we walked past my favorite Disney resort, Beach Club. If I could stay anywhere on Disney property every trip, it would probably be there. We continued over to Disney's BoardWalk, where there was so much happening. The kids loved watching the performers, checking out the games, and soaking in the energy of the area. It feels like a completely different side of Disney that many families never experience. We played some games, won a few stuffies, and then the rain started back up!
One thing I always tell my clients is that you don't have to be staying at a resort to explore it. We quickly rushed inside, walked through Boardwalk Inn, checked out the lobby, explored the grounds, and started imagining what it would be like to stay there someday. Every Disney resort has its own personality and exploring them has become one of our favorite Disney traditions. As soon as the rain stopped we headed back out to the boardwalk.
By now the sun was starting to set, so we made our way back toward the Skyliner. Right as we got on, magic happened. We caught the EPCOT fireworks lighting up the sky. Watching fireworks from above while gliding through the air on the Skyliner felt like one of those unexpectedly magical Disney moments that you can't really plan for.
Wrapping Up with Pizza, Arcades, and "Disney Tired" Kids
By this point, I thought we were heading back, but my kids had other plans. They decided they wanted pizza, so we headed toward the POP Century area. I placed a mobile order for a large pizza, and by the time we arrived, it was almost ready. The kids played in the arcade while we waited, we grabbed our pizza, and then hopped on a bus back to Disney Springs.
When we finally made it back to the van, all three kids could barely keep their eyes open. We had spent 14 hours at Disney without a park ticket, without standing in a single ride line, and without spending hundreds of dollars on admission. We were completely exhausted, completely happy, and yes, absolutely Disney tired.
As a travel advisor, people are always surprised when I tell them that some of our favorite Disney days haven't involved a park ticket at all. Don't get me wrong—I love the parks. But there is something so relaxing about a rest day. It is very rare that you actually get to rest. But on days like this day, you can regroup and simply smile at the magic of the Disney bubble. We weren't staring at wait times. We weren't rushing to the next ride. We were just enjoying Disney together.

My Top Money-Saving Tips for a Non-Park Disney Day
We used free parking at Disney Springs, free Disney transportation all afternoon, free Skyliner rides, complimentary mini golf from our Magical Extras, and even took advantage of Disney Visa discounts at several locations. I’ll take 10-20% off anytime, and I made sure to earn my Disney rewards dollars for our next visit! Disney can be expensive, but there are still plenty of ways to add magic without adding a lot of extra cost. Besides, there is something incredibly special about a day where the only schedule you have to follow is your own. At the end of the day, the real Disney magic isn't only in the parks—it's all around.
