From Jersey Shore to Mountain Majesty: My Lake Tahoe Adventure Story

Hey there, fellow travelers! I’m Laura—wife, mom of three, chronic vacation planner, and the Chief Communications & Marketing Officer at Cugina & Cove Travel Co. I'm still riding the high from my most recent adventure, and I have to admit, it was a place I never thought to dream of visiting... let alone blog about!

It turns out there's something transformative about mountain air. Being from the Jersey Shore, I’m used to salty breezes and crashing waves, not alpine lakes and towering pines. But on a week-long trip to Lake Tahoe, California, with my husband and six of our close friends, I found myself completely swept away by the stillness, the grandeur, and the magic of it all.

To be clear, I am not the outdoorsy type. Camping? Not my thing. I’m much more of a spa-day, book-on-the-beach kind of girl. So when my husband suggested Lake Tahoe, my first reaction was hesitation—especially when I saw the word “hiking” pop up on the itinerary. But marriage is about compromise, right? And this time, compromise looked like trading flip-flops for hiking boots… with a little bougie twist.

We invited three couple-friends to join us and quickly built out a plan: mountain adventure, yes—but with luxury accommodations, great food, and plenty of relaxation. The logistics were no small feat (babysitters, flight schedules from four different cities, time off work), but once we all landed, we knew this was going to be one for the books.

Tahoe in Style

We flew first class from Newark with a connection in Salt Lake City, and a quick Delta Lounge stop set the tone perfectly. A mimosa, a Bloody Mary, and a stress-free boarding process turned travel into part of the fun. If you’ve ever debated upgrading, I can confirm: it’s worth it.

Our home base was a gorgeous four-bedroom, five-bath mountain house in Northstar Village. Think cozy fireplaces, a private hot tub, endless mountain views, and yes, the occasional coyote serenade at night. Northstar itself is a skier’s dream in the winter, but in summer it transforms into a playground for kayaking, paddle boarding, and exploring trails—while still offering the restaurants, shops, and energy of a vibrant resort village. It was the perfect blend of adventure and indulgence.

Our days struck a balance: invigorating hikes at Sand Harbor, lazy afternoons by the lake, and yes—one unexpected bear sighting (a story that’s much less terrifying in hindsight than it felt in the moment).

One highlight was our day at the Ritz-Carlton Lake Club, an exclusive beachfront hideaway limited to just 40 guests. Plush loungers, craft cocktails, paddle boards waiting at the dock, and even wellness smoothies—it felt like stepping into a private all-inclusive resort. It was one of those rare travel experiences where every single detail was thoughtfully handled, right down to the sunscreen stations and fresh towels.

And then there was the yacht day. Cugina & Cove handled all the details, and our private boat which was rented through BayWatch Boat Charters came complete with Captain Tim! He navigated us to hidden coves, a private island crowned with a castle, and the sparkling waters of Emerald Bay. Some of our crew swam and climbed, others lounged in the sun, and all of us laughed like we hadn’t in years.

We wrapped up in Reno at the Peppermill Resort and Spa Casino, a property designed with Italian-inspired flair. Between the sprawling pool deck, massive suites with fireplaces and spa tubs, and an evening cocktail under the glow of neon lights, it was the perfect finale before heading home.

Why Trips Like This Matter

Looking back, Tahoe wasn’t just about the hikes or the hot tubs or the lake views—it was about the people we experienced it with. Life gets busy. Jobs, responsibilities, and distance all make it harder to carve out time with friends. But this trip reminded me how deeply we need those connections—the ones that make you laugh until your cheeks hurt, that pull you out of your routine, and that fill your life with stories you’ll tell for years.

The truth is, money comes and goes, schedules are always hectic, and the “perfect time” rarely shows up. But the memories? Those last forever. Standing on a yacht in the middle of Lake Tahoe, sipping cocktails with friends we’ve loved for decades, I realized: this is it. These are the moments that make life full.

So here’s my advice: take the trip. Book the ticket. Say yes to the adventure with the people who make your world brighter. Because at the end of it all, it won’t be the deadlines or the daily grind you remember—it will be the laughter echoing across a mountain lake, the clink of glasses at sunset, and the friendships that carry you through every season of life.
